Freight Consolidation: Small Shipments, Full-Truck Economics

Crated freight staged in the aisles of KDM Logistics' Mississauga warehouse ahead of consolidation

Shipping four skids on their own is the most expensive way to move four skids. They pay full LTL rates, they get handled at every terminal along the way, and they arrive on somebody else's schedule. Consolidation exists to fix exactly that.

What freight consolidation is

Multiple smaller shipments heading the same direction get combined into one full trailer. Instead of four shippers each paying LTL rates for a quarter of a truck, everyone pays a share of one truck that runs the lane once. Full-truck economics, without needing a full truck of your own.

How it works at our dock

Freight arrives at our Mississauga facility, from your dock, from your suppliers, or straight out of an import container we pulled from the terminal. It gets staged, built into a full load with compatible freight, and one trailer runs the lane. At the far end it deconsolidates and delivers, including tailgate final mile for receivers without a dock.

Where the savings come from

  • One linehaul instead of several LTL bills
  • Fewer touches, which means fewer damage claims and less shrink
  • Predictable weekly departures you can plan inventory around
  • Import containers destuffed and merged with domestic freight in one building (cross-docking, explained here)

Is consolidation right for your freight?

A single time-critical shipment usually wants a dedicated truck and no waiting. Steady weekly volume moving on repeatable lanes is where consolidation shines, and it is where our customers see the biggest line-item drop on their freight spend.
